The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted on December 22, 1993 the declaration of a special date to celebrate "World Water Day" on 22 March each year.

On this day the various States should place particular activities such as promoting public awareness through media, rallies, meetings, cultural and environmental conferences, in which dialogue on environmental issues in each country, region and location from water as main theme.

build our cities and towns near water, we bathe in water, play in water, work with water, our economies are based largely on the strength of its power to generate electricity, we are transported through it, all the products we buy and sell are in one way or another into the water. Our daily lives are set in and around water, without it our existence is inconceivable.

Lack of water causes more deaths each year than war, every day 4,500 children die from illnesses caused by unsafe water, one billion people lack safe drinking water, 2,600 million lack basic sanitation, a third of the planet is transformed into desert due to lack of water.

Thanks to the forests that still remain in Latin America, we have a privileged position in water, with only 6% of world population 26% of available freshwater. The delicate problem however, is not quantity but quality, more and more rivers and streams that have a dangerous degree of pollution and toxic waste.

But despite the awareness that governments and the world's population have about the serious problem that is representing the pollution and water scarcity is very little that is done at all levels, from international agencies, government national, departmental and municipal governments.

Regarding Colombia, announced that studies will suffer from a severe water deficit equivalent to 70% within 20 years. Only Straw moor White Star is the water which supplies water to 44 water systems in 10 municipalities in our region is suffering a felling of approximately 110 hectares per year, according to the Updated Plan for Sustainable Management of the Waste's 2007 White Straw Corponariño.

As to Colombia, announced that studies will suffer from a severe water deficit equivalent to 70% within 20 years. Only Straw wasteland that is the star White Water which supplies water to 44 water systems in 10 municipalities in our region is suffering a felling of approximately 110 hectares per year, according to the Updated Plan for Sustainable Management of the Waste's 2007 White Straw Corponariño.

From 1996 to 2007, lost 1,134 hectares of the 4,770 that existed between páramo ecosystems, sub-Andean paramo and high mountain, without the municipal and environmental authorities Corponariño greatest thing to have done such barbarity could leave us without water in a few years. If you continue this rate of destruction of the remaining 3,636 hectares would be over in less than three decades. It's a shame that the environment in our politicians and leaders in most cases only stay in campaign rhetoric, and a dead letter in the plans of government and development.

The only way out is to buy these properties for the absolute protection and respect Gualmatán municipality is one of the more efforts made in recent administrations elected, some with more acquisitions than others but agreeing this endeavor.

must recognize that the present administration led by Mayor Jaime Ortega Enrique Bastidas made a major acquisition in the year 2010 involving the purchase of 114 hectares of land in the paramo, plus 15 purchased in 2008 and had already the town totaling approximately 170 acres that are already in the municipality of Gualmatán and ensuring absolute protection of this area. And he would be pear list is the purchase of another 150 hectares in the words of Lord Mayor of Gualmatán, we hope to achieve that goal for the welfare of communities in the municipality.

is important to consider that the municipality of Gualmatán is one of the smallest in area with approximately 36 square kilometers, however is that most are taking over and protecting natural areas that are part of the 7 Star White Water Straw. Hopefully other municipalities put the same effort, because this does not work to save wilderness in parts, the only way to save is in the integrity of its natural territory because it is a single ecosystem.
